Develop Groove, Harmony, and Musical Confidence on Bass
Hip Hop & Jazz-Informed Bass Lessons Built Around the Groove Lab System
Learn how rhythm, harmony, and bass line construction work together through a practical framework designed to improve timing, pocket, harmonic awareness, and musical decision-making.
What Is Groove Lab?
Groove Lab is a bass education framework built around the relationship between rhythm and harmony.
Instead of memorizing songs and patterns, students learn the skills that drive musical decision-making:
Groove & Timing
Harmony & Bass Function
Musical Awareness
Creative Application
Hip Hop and Jazz provide the primary musical lenses used to develop these skills.
Why Most Bass Players Get Stuck
Many bass players spend years collecting songs, exercises, and theory concepts but still struggle when faced with a new musical situation.
They know scales.
They know patterns.
They may even know songs.
But they aren't always sure:
Why a groove feels good
Which note choice best supports a chord
How to create a bass line from scratch
How to adapt when the music changes
Groove Lab focuses on developing the skills behind those choices.
Instead of memorizing more information, students learn how rhythm, harmony, and musical context work together so they can make better musical decisions in real playing situations.
Groove Lab Teaches Four Core Skills
Groove & Timing
Develop pulse, subdivision, pocket, and note placement through a deeper breakdown of these concepts in the Groove Theory article.
Harmony
Understand chord function, voice leading, and bass line construction through practical bass guitar application. These ideas are explored further in the Voice Leading and Harmony lessons.
Musical Awareness
Develop the ability to hear how rhythm, harmony, and arrangement interact in real musical situations. These ideas are applied throughout Groove Lab lessons and analysis-based studies.
Decision-Making
Apply groove, harmony, and musical awareness to create, adapt, and evaluate bass lines in real musical situations. These concepts come to life in Groove Lab student submissions and analysis-based breakdowns.
Students Learn To:
Develop stronger groove and timing
Understand harmony and bass function
Create and adapt bass lines with confidence
Analyze grooves and musical arrangements
Make informed musical decisions in real-world situations
Start with a Groove & Harmony Diagnostic Session
We’ll break down your playing, identify exactly what’s holding your groove back,
and map out how to get you into the Groove Lab system.
Before any lessons begin, we start with a short consultation to understand how you currently approach groove, timing, and harmony on the bass.
This is a diagnostic session where we identify what’s limiting your feel, your time, and your ability to build musical bass lines.
From there, we decide whether structured lessons through the Groove Lab system are the right fit for your goals.
During your session, we’ll:
Listen to how you currently approach groove and timing
Identify where your rhythm, feel, or harmonic understanding is breaking down
Talk through what you’re trying to achieve musically
Map out whether structured coaching is the right next step for you
